Omega B vs AFNNC Solar on Saturday 23rd March 2019

Today, fourth position of the Herts County League, Division 1 table, Omega 2 face 2nd position AFNNC Solar.   This is expected to be a very tough match as statistically, AFNNC Solar can still qualify for the playoffs as they sit just 2 points behind the top of the table.

The game starts and it’s looking to be the game it is expected with AFNNC Solar taking an early lead 4-1 in the opening minutes.   However, Omega are determined and keen to give it their all and soon get their act together to close the lead and the play is matched by both teams.   A fall in the centre third on Omega’s centre pass sees C, Lucy Andrews on the floor but the team adamant they were not calling for injury time.  However the umpire looks to the bench and sees the coach indicating with his hands and the decision is made.  Confusion in the team is evident as no-one understands why Lucy has to leave the court.   A swift change of Molly Brett from WD to C and the game continues with AFNNC taking the next goal and Lucy is allowed back on court, but has to return to the vacant position.   Rather than unsettle the team, they become more determined and battle on for the rest of the quarter.   Great teamwork in the whole attack from WA, Emma Faulkner; C, Molly Brett, GA, Emma Maidment, finished off with fantastic movement and shooting by GS, Ruby Brett sees the team not only claw back the deficit goals, but take a 1-goal lead by end of the quarter, with a score of 13-12.

A quick reshuffle back to starting positions in the quarter break and the team settle back into the game.  Both teams give their all as neither want to loose the battle as each are as competitive as the other.   This quarter doesn’t flow so well for Omega with the team not always seeing their shooter, but also seeing a more static shooter than the first half, which makes GA, Emma work for her money (not that she gets any!!!).   Neither team make many errors, but Solar manage to benefit more from Omega’s and once again take the lead by end of the quarter, with a result by half time of 26-28 to Solar.

Hannah Brown steps in to GS and Ruby Brett takes the bench to start the second half.  Omega struggle to settle at the start, but soon get into their stride and adapt well to change their feeding style as a result of the change of shooter.  However, they are still not always feeding the circle at the first opportunity and giving GA, Emma the extra pressure.   Omega make more mistakes this quarter, loosing many balls with congestion and lack of player spacial awareness and positioning, putting more pressure on defence players GK, Louise Cousins and GD, Sam Abbott, who battle on in an attempt to prevent the goals.  However AFNNC Solar grasps every opportunity to score and stretch their lead, ending the quarter 46-40 to Solar.

A final chat, a swap of position for Molly into WA and Emma Faulkner into WD and a determined team retake the court.  Ready to give their all to the bitter end, they know that a 6 goal deficit is going to be hard to overcome in the final quarter, particularly to a strong opposition.   The change of dynamics sees some fantastic feeds from WA, Molly to GS, Hannah from the centre circle or just inside the goal third on several occasions, resulting in the team managing to close the lead in the first half of the quarter.  GD, Sam and GK, Louise apply the pressure in defence this quarter, coupled with interceptions from C, Lucy, which allow them to win over some much needed balls to allow the team to begin to take the lead.  An excited bench are screaming their support and encouraging the team to play the ball safe in the latter minutes and wait for the right opportunity to move it forward.  The team took heed and the reward paid off, seeing a fantastic win for the team and a final result of 59-55!

A great game to watch and one which was well contested by both teams and well managed by strong umpires.  A great end to the season, securing the team in fourth position for their first season in Division 1.  Well deserved to the whole squad who have played this season…..and to those who have helped out when needed.

Omega 1 vs Norfolk Utd – Saturday 9th March 2019

By | Regional Match Reports | No Comments

Omega 1 travelled to Norwich for their penultimate game in their first year in Division 1 of the East Region League, with a bit of a venue problem flagged whilst en-route and the team were unsure where they would end up playing, but told to continue neverthless.  The starting squad were:-

GS – Charlotte Jordan; GA – Natalie Faal; WA – Sophie Cockrill; C – Nicola Rantell (playing up from the Herts League Team); WD – Hannah Sell; GD – Claire Daws; GK – Phoebe Gillen and reserve defender Leigh Rees-Reynolds sitting on the bench for the first quarter.

A delayed start due to the previous game starting late as a result of the venue double-booking and Norfolk look strong.  Omega’s shooters are put off by the Norfolk defenders, missing several chances at goal in the opening minutes and Norfork capitalise on this, taking an early lead 7-1.   A great interception by WD, Hannah Sell taking the centre-pass from the opposition, but Omega struggle to hold on to possession as a fumbled ball in our shooting third sees the ball back in Norfolk’s hands and taken to goal.   Omega’s GA, Natalie Faal attempts to work the circle feeds, but the ball goes off the side-line and Norfolk’s GA is quick to punish Omega for their errors, securing yet another goal from what should have been Omega’s.  Next it’s Norfork’s GA who misses a shot and GK, Phoebe Gillen wins the rebound.  Her efforts are wasted as a forced pass from mid third into our attacking goal is lost and Norfolk punish yet again.  Omega get on a roll in the latter minutes of the game, which started with Norfolk being called for ball handling and their WD picking up a caution for contact.  It was then helped by the pressure applied by the circle defence, GD Claire Daws applying the pressure and GK Phoebe Gillens picking up the rebound, giving Omega a second chance at goal, which they secured.  Further pressure was applied by defence, forcing a back-pass from around the circle edge, back to the transverse line, which was stolen by WA, Sophie Cockrill and taken to goal.   A missed shot on Omega’s centre pass and Norfolk attempt to take the ball to goal, but an interception by C, Nicola Rantell gives a second chance to Omega and GS, Charlotte Jordan rewards the effort as the Norfolk GK picks up a caution for contact and a penalty is rewarded.  The team claw back 4 goals to reduce the lead to just 3 goals, with a 7-10 score.  The next three goals go goal for goal and the final centre pass is Omega’s, but Norfolk’s WA knocks the ball off WD, Hannah Sell and the ball goes off the side-line.  Norfolk take the throw in, but another interception from C, Nicola Rantell gives Omega the final stab at goal.  The whistle is blown just before the shot is taken and the quarter ends 12-8 to Norfolk.

The second quarter sees Leigh Rees-Reynolds take the GD bib and Claire Daw taking the bench.  Norfolk start the quarter but a quick steal by Omega who then control their play as they conquer the zone setup, sees them taking the ball to the shooting third, but loosing it on a forced feed into the circle which is intercepted.  The ball travels down court, but GD, Leigh Rees-Reynolds reciprocates and wins back the ball from Norfolk, intercepting the circle feed and the ball is taken back up court to the Omega circle once more.   The ball is intercepted again and is once again taken away from Omega, but swiftly returned and finally!!!….a goal is scored and it’s Omega’s!  Norfolk’s GA swings the ball across to her WA and the ball goes off the sideline.  Omega take the sideline throw but a footwork call by WA, Sophie Cockrill at the circle edge sees the ball back with Norfolk, who attempt to find their shooter but GD, Leigh tips the ball and Omega manage to take the ball down court, but the ball from WA, Sophie in to the shooters goes off the goal line.  Sophie digs deep to win back the ball but is not rewarded for her efforts and Norfolk regain possession and steal the goal.   Norfolk’s GD drives hard to intercept a pass from WD,  Hannah Sell, in to GA, Natalie Faal and steals it cleanly, but a missed shot by the Norfolk shooter gives Omega another chance, which they play safely to goal.  Norfolk punish a couple of errors made by the team, but GD, Leigh fights on to intercept the first ball on Norfolk’s centre pass but her efforts are in vein as the shot is missed and Norfolk take the goal.   The score in the final minutes is 21-14 and Omega begin another roll.  GK, Phoebe fights for a rebound and the game is interrupted by an injury call for Norfolk’s C.  Omega keep possession to take the goal and the they begin to claw back once more, securing the next 4 goals, similar to the first quarter, resulting in the score at the end of the first half is 18-22 to Norfolk.

The third quarter sees Hannah Sell taking the bench, replaced at WD by Claire Daws and Omega start, taking the first goal rapidly, but the next three goals are taken by Norfolk, on two occasions needing 2 attempts at the shot, but nevertheless gaining the goals as a result of possession lost by Omega on missed shots which Norfolk rebounded.  On the 3rd goal for Norfolk, Phoebe wins a rebound, but this is short lived and back in the opposition’s hands for the goal.  GA, Natalie Faal gets her eye in and gains a great goal for her team and on our next centre pass, the team all work well together to bring the ball back to the circle for Natalie to gain another.  GD, Leigh gains a rebound for Omega, but the possession is lost on the feed in to the shooters and Norfolk punish.    Omega miss the next shot and once again Norfolk capitalise.  A held ball call against Norfolk WD gives possession to Omega, but a wild ball throw sees the ball off the side-line and back with the opposition.    A determined Omega manage to win back the ball once more and the team take the goal.   A great feed from C Nicola, in to GS, Charlotte, who doubles-back for the ball under the post sees Omega taking the goal.  Norfolk loose their centre pass off the sideline but Omega fail to hold on to it as the Norfolk GD swipes it away, giving her team the opportunity for a further goal, which they reward her with.  Norfolk’s centre pass and GD Leigh is hot on her heals, stealing the first ball which Omega use to secure a goal.  The score going into the final quarter is 28-37 to Norfolk, who have managed to increase their lead by punishing every error, which Omega failed to be able to reciprocate.

Norfolk start the quarter once more and the first 6 goals go goal for goal.  Omega then start another run of goals, started with GS, Charlotte forced to take a long shot due to lack of support in and around the circle and she secures the goal.  This followed on with C, Nicola stealing Norfolk’s centre pass and Charlotte rewarding her efforts with the next goal.   Some great teamwork play sees GA, Natalie taking her GD away from her team mate in the circle, creating great space for a superb feed from C Nicola straight in to GS Charlotte for the goal.    GD, Leigh drives to the attack transverse line to support the team with re-adjusting, supporting them in gaining another goal.   A held ball call against Omega allows Norfolk back into play and gives them the opportunity for a goal.  The Norfolk WD picks up a warning for persistent contact, giving GS, Charlotte a second chance at the goal, which she secures.   Within seconds of the warning, the WD calls injury time and is replaced from the bench to avoid further repercussion.   This quarter saw runs of 4 goals at a time by each team on a couple of occasions with both teams making many errors, but the early lead secured by Norfolk proved too tough for Omega to turnover.  A great display of netball, however many errors made by both teams.  However, Norfolk were able to punish Omega’s errors more, resulting in them winning the game 52-43.    As usual, a well contested game and so much determination from both teams giving the spectators a great game to watch.

Omega 1 vs MK Netters Gold – Sunday 3rd March 2019

By | Regional Match Reports | No Comments

Omega 1 meet MK Netters Gold in the 2nd half of the East Region, Division 1 fixtures and having lost to them with a depleted team in the first half of the season, Omega are keen to settle the score and take the game.

MK start the game and the first few 3 goals for each team are matched goal for goal.  Omega show great control as they play the ball safely, resetting as necessary to ensure they take the ball to goal each time as MK start strong and pile on the defensive pressure.  The first change in the game is when MK’s GA breaks on their centre pass, but an immediate footwork call against Omega sees the ball back in their hands, however they loose it off the goal line and Omega take the first lead in the game to punish the error.  A contact call against GS, Charlotte, who is thought to have brought the ball up to the GKs hands and MK take the ball to goal to equalise the score 4-4.   MK then attempt to feed their GS, but the ball goes off the goal line and Omega get the chance to steal the lead once more,  but a footwork call in the shooting circle returns the ball to MK, but Omega win it back before the ball leaves the third and GA, Natalie rewards the efforts with the goal.  Omega get a 4 goal run as MK’s C footworks on the edge of their shooting circle and Omega safely take the ball to goal.  Omega force feed some balls into the Charlotte, with the ball fed high, but directly to the player and the tall GK steals them with ease each time.   Another footwork call against Omega, mid-court allows MK to equalise 8-8  and then take the next goal.  MKs GA is called for footwork and Omega take the ball to the circle edge, but the ball is lost off the goal line and MK begin their drive up court, but a replay call against the MK’s C gives the 2nd chance at goal to Omega which they secure.  GK, Phoebe Gillen wins a rebound and the team take the ball to the circle edge, but another high feed into Charlotte is whipped away by the GK once again.  Fortunately for the team, the MK C errors again and Omega punich her once more.   A final attempt at a long ball feed into Charlotte is lost off the goal line to end the quarter 13-11 to Omega.

Omega start the second quarter but a missed shot at the first opportunity sees the ball in MKs hands.  This is short lived as MK C errors again.  Omega miss their second attempt at goal but are saved by the GK having the final touch of the ball before it goes off the goal line and the shot is successful on the third attempt.  Both teams apply pressure, resulting in both teams erroring in the early minutes of the quarter.  A ball sent off the side-line by MK gives Omega the chance at a goal, but a pass back from within the shooting third to the centre third is intercepted by MK and they take it to goal.  MKs GD is given a quiet word to tidy up her contact and obstruction in this quarter.   In opening minutes of the quarter, Omega gain 3 consecutive goals and up to half way through it goes goal for goal, but in the 2nd half, Omega manage to secure 2 goals to every 1 of their opposition before it settles back to goal for goal to close the quarter 27-21.

A change to the team at half time, sees Leigh Rees-Reynolds take up the GD position, moving Claire Daws to WD, Hannah Sells to WA and Sophie Cockrill taking the bench.  The first goal of the 2nd half of the game is  MKs off their first centre pass.  The first feed in to our shooter is intercepted by MKs GD, but she is called for ball-handling, giving Omega the chance to score and they succeed.  MKs C is picks up a caution and MK’s WD falls hard to the ground after she cleanly intercepts a pass and calls time for a knee injury.  She leaves the court after a couple of minutes and the game restarts.  GK, Phoebe Gillen applies the pressure in the circle and this forces MK to error with their feed, which goes off the goal line.  Omega attempt to take the ball to goal but are struggling to feed the shooters due to the strong defensive play and great reading of the passes by the opposition.   MK begin to claw back the goal difference are this quarter it’s their turn to take 3 consecutive goals  and in the latter minutes, 2 goals to Omegas 1 on a couple of occations, allowing them not only to equalise, but take a 1 goal lead to end the quarter 36-37 to MK.

A final team change in an attempt to change up the dynamics, sees Claire  return to GD, Leigh swapping with her into WD, Sophie Cockrill returning to WA, Hannah and Natalie taking the bench and Emma Maidment taking the GA position for the last quarter.  MK start the quarter and secure the first goal, but this is the last goal they achieve for some time!  Omega apply fantastic defensive pressure and GK, Phoebe gets into her game stealing several interceptions, along with Claire and Leigh to gain a roll for Omega in the early minutes.  This coupled with some great inter-passing by Emma and Charlotte in the circle and support all down the court by all players to ensure the safe ball play resulting in them securing 9 consecutive goals and opening up the lead which proves challenging for the opposition.    Several cautions are handed out this quarter, the first of which is given to MK’s GK gains a caution for persistent obstruction in the first few minutes, the second to Omega’s WA for persistent contact and the third in the latter minutes to MK’s WA for deliberate contact on a penalty pass.   MK fight back in the final minutes of the game clawing back at the lead, but the 9 goal roll Omega secured at the start of the quarter proved too hard to reduce, resulting in a final score of 49-44 to Omega.  A great final quarter and end to the game!

Omega 2 vs Turnford 3 on Saturday 2nd March 2019

Omega 2’s take on Turnford 3 in the second round of the Herts County League, Division 1 fixtures, with  a new setup for the team and with Sophie Humphry out of position in GD.

Turnford start the game and are quick to secure the first goal.  Omega loose their first centre pass, but get a second chance as they win back the ball for GA, Emma Maidment to score.   Turnford take the third goal, then Omega settle into their game and get on an early roll to take the next 4 goals to gain an early lead, however this doesn’t last long as Turnford quickly respond and equalise the score once more.   Tight defending in our defence circle by GD, Sophie Humprhy and GK, Louise Cousins sees Turnford trying to force feed their shooters and the ball being thrown off the goal line on a couple of occasions, allowing Omega to capitalise on their errors.  This quarter sees Omega taking the lead on three occasions helped by interceptions by WA, Lucy Andrews, WD, Molly Brett and GD, Sophie , but every time, Turnford fight back hard and equalise the score before Omega try again.  Also seen this quarter is GA, Emma Maidment getting into her stride, supporting the team in bringing the ball to the circle and working well with GS, Ruby Brett to for each to demonstrate accuracy in their shots.  In the final minute, Omega get the opportunity to secure a one-goal lead to go into the next quarter, but an error in Omega’s shooting circle gives Turnford the same chance.  Lucky for Omega they miss the shot and GK, Louise Cousins wins the rebound on the whistle, leaving the score 11-11.

The second quarter starts in a similar vein to the first, with each team taking their first goal and Omega getting on a run with three consecutive goals, but once again, Turnford fight back to keep the goal difference close.  Turnford Centre goes offside in their shooting circle and Omega capitalise on the error and take the goal.    Another chance for Omega thanks to an interception by GD, Sophie, who manages to knock the ball up court , but in the usual Omega fashion, we fail to pick up the loose ball and Turnford take the goal to close the gap in the score to just one goal at 21-20 to Omega.  Turnford have the next centre pass and play it safe and their shooters reward them to equalise the score 21-21.   A goal line pass and GA, Emma Maidment is called for a foul throw for stepping on court before releasing the ball and Turnford capitalise on the umpire’s decision, giving them a one goal lead.  GD, Sophie intercepts the ball once more, but again Omega loose the ball in their defensive third and Turnford punish them.  Turnford have the final centre pass of the first half of the game and secure their goal to leave the score 22-24 to Turnford going into the second half of the game.

Omega bring on sub, Hannah Brown, replacing Ruby Brett in the GS position.  Omega loose their first attempt at goal on the first centre pass with a missed shot and Turnford increase their lead further having secured the first two goals of the quarter.  Omega are not ready to concede the game and show great determination as they begin to claw back the goals, forcing their opposition to falter.  WA, Emma Faulkner intercepts the ball, followed by WD, Molly which allows Omega to equalise 29-29 early in the quarter.  Defensive players Louise and Sophie apply the pressure on their opponents and Louise wins a rebound, but is called for ball handling and Turnford secure the goal.   Turnford take the lead once more, but both teams dig deep, each determined to take and maintain the lead, but Omega succeed in their quest in the final minutes and this is the turnaround in the game.   With 1.7 seconds on the clock, it’s Turnford’s centre pass and their WA instructs their C to hold on to the ball, but she passes it and they loose their advantage to start the final quarter.

Going into the final quarter, Omega are leading 41-36 and are told to play the ball safely to goal.   Turnford’s GS misses two attempts at a goal and the ball is knocked out of the circle. This time the loose ball is ssuccessfully picked up by WD, Molly and the team work the ball up-court to find GS, Hannah Brown, to secure the goal.     Turnford contact on Omega’s pass mid court and they take the ball from GA, Emma, but there is no decision made by the umpires, resulting in Turnford taking the ball to their shooters, but karma is evident as their shot is missed and the ball is back in Omega’s hands.  Omega take the ball to their circle edge and attempt to feed a high ball into Hannah, but the Turnford GK tips the ball and Turnford shooters get another chance.  They miss again and the ball is worked back to Omega’s shooters and this time they score.   A forced feed from WA, Emma to GS, Hannah goes off the goal line and Turnford punish the error with a goal.  With five minutes remaining in the quarter, the score is 54-42 to Omega and GD, Sophie intercepts the feed to the Turnford shooters, but a long ball up the court is not met and Turnford gain possession to take the goal.   A missed shot by GA, Emma sees her immediately turn on her defensive play, determined to win back the ball, which she is quick to achieve, just outside the circle and this time she plants it through the net to reward her efforts.  An interception on Turnford’s centre pass by WD, Molly gives Omega another goal to increase their lead to 13 goals and in the final twp minutes of the game, Turnford GS is called for ball handling on two separate occasions and each time Omega are quick to capitalise on their error, allowing the final score of 60-45 to Omega.  A well deserved win to end a great display of netball.

Omega Youths vs Panthers – Saturday 2nd March 2019

Youths vs Panthers 2nd March 2019

Omega Youths faced experience team Panthers in the Herts & District League at Wodson Park on Saturday 2nd March 2019.

Having worked on the defensive skills for the past four weeks, Omega were told to remember to tightly mark their player, 2-hand mark and delay the attacker from  moving forward with the aim of forcing errors and gaining as many interceptions as possible.

Although the first half of the game was not as tight as they should have been defensively, the team increased their pressure throughout the game, resulting in the defensive players, GD/GK, Millie Pickard and  Neave Parsons tipping the ball, intercepting the feeds and winning the rebounds consistently throughout the game to give their team the opportunity to increase their score.  WD, Rachel Toye was positioned well at the top of the circle enabling her to pick up the tipped balls from the defenders, securing more chances for the team.

On the other side of the court, the shooting from GA, Lauren Ahern was on form, achieving 70% conversion of her shots throughout the game and gaining 73% of the total goals scored for her team.  Her partner in crime, GS, Yasmin Rogers demonstrated great understanding of teamwork, swinging the ball from the circle edge, across to the supporting WA, Louise Merrick or C, Shannon Mooney, to feed Lauren into a better position for shooting.   The attack play worked really well at times in our shooting third, with some very good use of the circle edge players and feeds into the shooters, although on some occasions, some more thought was needed on the type of pass needed for the situation presented as several were intercepted by the tall Panthers defenders.

Although the team turned-over many a ball, their ability to hold on to it as they came down court was lacking, with the opposition reading the pass and intercepting it and Panthers took back the balls that Omega have won from them, making our turnovers, short-lived.

Some displays of great play were seen in this game, but also some things to work on such as reaction, alertness and speed. Likewise some work on understanding which pass suits the situation.
